Xscape to uMhlanga Sands Resort where “Kid is King”

Identification of guest profile
Since inception in the mid 70’s, the uMhlanga Sands Resort earned a reputation as the entertainment hub of Umhlanga Rocks, attracting many socialites and celebrities.

In 1982 when it was converted into a Timeshare Resort there was a major shift in the guest profile with a move towards families with kids. This created a need for entertainment and “Kid is King” was developed. This important hallmark continues today.

Implementing the “Xscape” concept

Planning began about 2 years ago. The concept was to provide facilities that catered to kids of all ages; keeping them meaningfully occupied while having the time of their lives.

Tsogo Sun’s launch of the “Xscape” concept, put together by Tsogo Sun Brand Manager, Louis Sevel, could not have been better timed for the design team Falconer Designs to incorporate into the design of the new facility.

Features of the “Xscape” concept
Phase 1 was completed in June 2016.This provides a secure indoor facility where parents can visit the coffee shop or play board games while watching their children.

The facility offers:

  • A soft toy room for toddlers up to age 4
  • A jungle gym with climbing wall for kids up to age 12
  • 3 television sets offering X-Box games
  • An activity room where children of different ages can partake in crafts such as biscuit baking and pizza making

Come evening, the room is transformed into a kid’s discotheque with state of the art lighting or a high definition movie theatre showing the latest video releases. The main stage caters for vibrant live shows that are included in planned daily activities.

Phase 2, Situated next to the family pool, will be completed in Novemeber 2016. It will boast a range of water slides that will occupy kids for hours. The new artificial lawns and permanent umbrellas installed on the family pool deck are already proving popular.

The total cost of the project is R 11.4 million, funded entirely by the uMhlanga Sands Shareblock Reserve fund.
